Sportspharmacy aims to highlight the emerging role of the pharmacist in the area of sports medicine. We aim to showcase pharmacist’s involvement at international sporting events including the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
The specialty of Sports Pharmacy covers:
Awareness
Awareness of drugs in sport in the community, medicine & industry for both performance modification and the prevention and treatment of disease.
Therapy
Knowledge of therapeutic use of drugs in sport and how pharmacist interventions can support sport related illness or injury.
Prevention
Use of pharmacotherapy to prevent sport-related illness or injury and maintain well-being.
Optimisation
Safe and rational use of nutrition and supplements to optimise performance.
Abuse
Knowledge of the use of drugs in sport for competitive advantage.
Detection. Science of detecting drugs of abuse in the body.

About the Editor – Mark Stuart
Mark was the Superintendent Pharmacist for the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games and Pharmacist for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. He worked with doping control for the Athens 2004 and Turin 2006 Olympics and prepared the training programme for the equestrian medical staff for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Mark currently works for the British Medical Journal and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (US) as the Director of the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare. He was the editor of the 2008 World Health Organisation Model Formulary and is on the editorial board of the International Olympic Committee Journal of Sports Medicine.
Mark is the Pharmacy Clinical Lead for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Editor – Frances Akinwunmi
Frances Akinwunmi is a clinical pharmacist with a PhD in Pharmacy Practice and Policy. The primary focus of Frances’ work is the development and pragmatic implementation of medicines-related services policy. Frances is part of the 2012 Pharmacy Clinical Services Group, where she leads on the development and operationalisation of medicines management processes for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Editor – Margaret Hagan
Margaret Hagan is a Governance Manager for Women’s and Family Health at Newham University Hospital Trust. Margaret is a registered pharmacy technician with experience in community and hospital pharmacies. She has a degree in healthcare management and further studies in risk and project management. Margaret works with UK Sport on the management of their online global drug information database.
